Africa Style
Words by Adora Mba
The art of haggling is a skill that requires quick thinking, problem-solving, mathematics, confidence and speech, and both locals and visitors alike must master it in order to survive on the battlefield that is the African market place.
From travel guides to forums one can find many theories on how visitors should approach market tradesmen in order to get the best price. While insightful, most of these are written by foreigners and visitors. What better way to learn the tricks of African market culture than from the tradesmen themselves? After spending time in various West African markets and speaking to the veteran sales people on the ground, we give you the ‘secrets’ tips of haggling:
-
Smile
A pretty smile goes a long way. A long, LONG way. Especially women (apologies gents!)
-
Talk Local
If you happen to speak a few words of the local language or dialect, or pidgin english – even if it is just a “hello” in the native language -you stand a chance of becoming a firm favourite.
-
Flattery
Flattery of the products goes a long way. Especially if compared the stall next door!
-
Divide By 2
Slashing the price in half is usually a good starting point. Anymore than that could be seen as offensive, any less and they know you are clueless and will take you for a ride.
-
Sob Stories
Sob stories do work so pull on their heartstrings: “I don’t have enough, this is all the money i have left…”
-
Politeness
Aggression is never taken well. Even if you do not want the item, politely decline.
-
Buy in Bulk
Buy in bulk, but make sure your maths is on point! Tradesmen may seem to be giving you a deal “two for the price of one”, but then you may be paying more for that two more than you would have for the one because you have been enticed by the freebie. *WARNING* check the freebie, it may be broken.
-
Play The Field
Should one tradesman not shift, definitely go and check out others selling the same item, although be warned, most of market tradesmen are related! So the money will most likely go the family anyway because – like a Vegas casino – the house always wins.
Lastly, enjoy the experience! It’s not a stressful or frustrating process. Yes it is hot, and busy, and you just want the gorgeous handmade leather wallet so that you can retreat to your air-conditioned hotel and relax by the pool… but do take it as an exciting way to communicate. You never know, you may just learn some additional skills that will help you to get just what you want…
